 Canterbury Tales
by Geoffrey Chaucer; adapted by Seymour Chwast
Bloomsbury USA
On sale now

Accompany a band of merry medieval pilgrims as they make their way—on motorcycles, of course—to Canterbury. Meeting at the Tabard Inn, the travelers, including a battle-worn knight, a sweetly pretentious prioress, the bawdy Wife of Bath, and an emaciated scholar-clerk, come up with a plan to pass time on the journey to Thomas à Becket's shrine by telling stories. The twenty-four tales, which range from high romance set in ancient Greece to low comedy in contemporary England, are adapted into graphic novel form by Seymour Chwast—a pitch-perfect transposition of Chaucer's pointed satire. Chwast's illustrations relate tales of trust and treachery, of piety and bawdiness, in an engaging style that will appeal to those who have enjoyed The Canterbury Tales for years, and those for whom this is a first, delectable introduction.

Yiddishkeit

edited by Harvey Peker and Paul Buhle; introduction by Neal Gabler
Abrams ComicArts
On sale now

In Yiddishkeit: Jewish Vernacular & the New Land, award-winning authors Harvey Pekar and Paul Buhle trace the influence of Yiddish from medieval Europe to the tenements of New York’s Lower East Side. This comics anthology—the last fully realized work by Pekar—provides thoughtful revelations about the far-reaching influences of Yiddish in the twenty-first century, and contains original stories by notable writers and artists such as Barry Deutsch, Peter Kuper, Allen Lewis Rickman, Spain Rodriguez, and Sharon Rudahl. Through illustrations, comics art, and a full-length play, themes of culture, performance, assimilation, and the revival of the language are explored, covering the full scope of Yiddishkeit (meaning “Jewishness,” as in, “a Jewish way of life”). Peeling back layers of dogma and decades of turgid scholarship, Pekar and Buhle shed new light and impart a modern discourse to help readers grasp the nuances of this colorful and nomadic culture.

Meanwhile, on the Gilbert side of town, High Soft Lisp’s Fritz returns in “Talkabout,” a 15-page dialogue with an old beau. Second up is the 35-page “King Vampire”: Two lovable teens, Cecil and Trini, want to join a local vampire club but real vampires show up and things get serious. Cecil loves it but Trini has her doubts about going all the way. But wait—is this a real story or another “Fritz movie”?

The Man Who Grew His Beard
by Olivier Schrauwen
Fantagraphics
On sale October 3
The Man Who Grew His Beard is Belgian cartoonist Olivier Schrauwen’s first American book, having staked a reputation over the last decade as one of Europe’s most talented storytellers. It collects seven short stories, each a headspinning display of craft and storytelling that mixes early 20th-century comics influences like Winsor McCay with a thoroughly contemporary voice that provokes and entertains with subversively surreal humor and subtle criticism of 20th-century tropes and images. The stories themselves, though each stands alone, are intertwined thematically, offering peeks into the minds of semi-autistic, achingly isolated men and their feverish inner worlds and how they interact and contrast with their real environment.
Mark Twain’s Autobiography, 1910–2010
by Michael Kupperman
Fantagraphics

Michael Kupperman has already indulged his love for Mark Twain in the pages of Tales Designed to Thrizzle, but the recent publication of Twain’s (real) autobiography has inspired the cartoonist to a full-blown book-length masterpiece of hilarity.
Nuts
by Gahan Wilson
Fantagraphics
On sale October 3
In this thematically and narratively linked series of one-page stories originally published in the National Lampoon’s “Funny Pages” section throughout the 1970s, the master of the macabre eschewed his usual ghouls, vampires, and end-of-the-world scenarios for a wry, pointed look at growing up normal in the real, yet endlessly weird world.
Prince Valiant, Vol. 4: 1943–1944
by Hal Foster
Fantagraphics
On sale October 3

As this fourth volume begins, Prince Valiant, haunted by Aleta, seeks Merlin’s wise counsel. This brief episode segues into one of Hal Foster’s patented epics, “The Long Voyage to Thule,” which ran for seven straight months and featured Valiant’s return to his birthplace and reunion with his father. Of course, Foster’s astonishingly detailed and evocative depictions of Val’s homeland contribute greatly to this sprawling epic. After a series of shorter adventures including “The Seductress,” “The Call of the Sea,” and “The Jealous Cripple,” Val finally decides he can stand it no more and sets out to find his long-lost love. Long-time fans know that his quest will eventually be successful, but Foster throws so many obstacles in the way of true love that the saga “The Winning of Aleta” would end up stretching a full year and a half, well into the next volume.
Prison Pit, Book 3
by Johnny Ryan

Walt Kelly started his career at age 13 in Connecticut as a cartoonist and reporter for the Bridgeport Post. In 1935, he moved to Los Angeles and joined the Walt Disney Studio, where he worked on classic animated films, including Pinocchio, Dumbo, and Fantasia. Rather than take sides in a bitter labor strike, he moved back east in 1941 and began drawing comic books. It was during this time that Kelly created Pogo Possum. The character first appeared in Animal Comics as a secondary player in the “Albert the Alligator” feature. It didn’t take long until Pogo became the comic’s leading character. After WWII, Kelly became artistic director at the New York Star, where he turned Pogo into a daily strip. By late 1949, Pogo appeared in hundreds of newspapers. Until his death in 1973, Kelly produced a feature that has become widely cherished among casual readers and aficionados alike. Special features in this sumptuous premiere volume, which is produced with the full cooperation of Kelly’s heirs, include a biographical introduction by Kelly biographer Steve Thompson, an extensive section by comics historian R. C. Harvey explaining some of the more obscure current references of the time, a foreword by legendary columnist Jimmy Breslin, and more.

Carl Barks’ Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge comics are considered among the greatest artistic and storytelling achievements in the history of the medium. After serving a stint at the Walt Disney studios as an in-betweener and a gag-man, Barks began drawing the comic book adventures of Donald Duck in 1942. He quickly mastered every aspect of cartooning and over the next nearly 30 years created some of the most memorable comics ever drawn—as well as some of the most memorable characters.

Jack Davis arrived on the illustration scene in the euphoric post-war America of the late 1940s, when consumer society was booming and the work force identified with commercial images that reflected this underlying sense of confidence and American bravado. Advertising agencies were looking for new ways to tap a rich and expanding market, and there was a vast array of media that needed illustrations. Davis’ animated and exuberant images possessed a sense of spontaneous energy that proved to have universal appeal in every medium he worked in. Jack Davis: Drawing American Pop Culture is a gigantic, unparalleled career-spanning retrospective, between whose hard covers resides the greatest collection — in terms of both quantity and quality — of Jack Davis’ work ever assembled.

I am a current library science student and am in the middle of a CD project for a graphic novel collection and couldn't be more thrilled to see such an informative resource.
