Tate’s Comics opened way back in 1993, as the “afterschool project” of then 17-year-old high-school student Tate Ottati. The original seed money for the store actually came from Marvel stock.
From its humble beginnings back in the early ’90s, when many comics shops were going out of business, Tate’s has grown to a legendary pop-culture superstore located in sunny South Florida. Currently, it possesses an impressive 6,000+ square feet in retail space and offers a diverse product mix, from graphic novels and art books to Japanese snacks. By appealing to a wide range of collectors with a wide range of interests, this shop has continued to grow and change over the years. In 2009, they will be celebrating their 16th anniversary.
In addition to the offerings at the main Tate’s store, they have a 700-square-foot loft art gallery and boutique called Bear and Bird, which showcases fine jewelry, crafts, and other gift items. A few doors down, there’s Tate’s Gaming Satellite, which is a separate 2,000-square-foot gaming location, complete with tables for tournaments and a community of gamers.
