The Last Dragon
written by Jane Yolen
illustrated by Rebecca Guay
Fantasy author Jane Yolen and comics artist Rebecca Guay bring a magical fairy tale to life in The Last Dragon. Exquisitely presented, the book is a charming epic.
Dragons have been thought wiped out for hundreds of years when a young girl named Tansy finds evidence otherwise. She soon discovers that one lone dragon has survived, and if left unchecked, it will wreak havoc (already, livestock is disappearing, and so are children).
A dashing hero swoops in to save the day, but it’s Tansy who really has the smarts and the oomph to make a difference here. The result is a wonderfully dense, story-rich, sprawling tale that packs adventure and some romance into every gorgeous page.
The storytelling is tight and compelling, but an even greater treat is the delightfully lush art. These painted landscapes are different from most graphic novel pages, and that may be offputting for some at first, but Guay’s art manages to pull the reader in and project them right into the middle of this illustrious setting.
The Last Dragon is a wonderfully engaging story through and through.
