My Girlfriend's a Geek, Vol. 4
written by Rize Shinba
At the opening of the latest book in this series, Taiga is dressed in a tuxedo and greets the reader with a polite, “Welcome home, mistress.” Well, he’s really greeting his girlfriend, Yuiko, but the page is set up so that he seems to be communicating with the reader.
Yuiko is a fujoshi, a specific kind of geek and a specific kind of otaku. She loves BL and moe and anime and manga and doujinshi…and annoying her boyfriend. Taiga is not otaku. He doesn’t understand why Yuiko makes him write BL stories for her or why she likes to try to set him up with other men.
My Girlfriend’s a Geek is based on a novel series of the same name that’s also published by Yen Press. Now in its fourth volume as a manga, Geek continues with the gimmick of Yuiko’s over-the-top geekiness messing with Taiga’s style. The story continues to be funny, but it is the same old stuff. If it didn’t work for you to begin with, it won’t now, but if you like the humor and otaku references, the series continues to give.
One can’t help but wonder why Taiga is with Yuiko if she really does annoy him so much. In the beginning, she sends him a box of doujinshi, which irritates and embarrasses him, and then she wants him to read it to her while she’s sick in bed. He doesn’t want to tell her he tutors an eighth-grade boy because she’ll probably get uke/seme ideas, and he still hasn’t become a fudanshi, though she’s trying her best. Yuiko does seem to be nothing but otaku, which works for humor but also doesn’t feel very realistic, especially as the same gimmick keeps being used.
Halfway through the story, Taiga finally blows up at Yuiko and it looks as if their relationship might end. It doesn’t, and Taiga admits to his tutoring job (and yes, Yuiko’s mind goes exactly where he expected it to). The two call a truce and so it seems the story of the easygoing boyfriend and the hyper girlfriend will continue. Part of the manga also concentrates on a friend of Yuiko’s who is also a fujoshi and who thinks she might have to break up with her boyfriend. The reason? He learned what a major fujoshi she is and might not be able to deal with it.
