Superheroes: An Amelia Rules! Book
written by Jimmy Gownley
In writer-artist Jimmy Gownley’s deft hands, Amelia is one of the sweetest and endearing comics series around today, yet it’s also painfully honest and real. Young Amelia is the child of divorced parents, uprooted from her life in the big city and forced to start anew—new friends, new school, new setting—in a small, boring town. Her imagination runs wild (she’s an incessantly creative type), she gets into trouble, she learns lessons, and she makes new friends, but before you start to think that this is the same well-tread YA ground that has been covered before, Gownley pulls a switch and surprises you.
Amelia’s bold and cantankerous, as all great YA heroines are, but she’s also human and flawed and able to make her own mistakes. But the real heart of the book shines through in the love that works its way into the pages without ever becoming treacle or gushy. Instead, it’s just moving, simple, true-life stuff. That’s real and honest in a way that is surprisingly refreshing in comics.
This collection of Amelia stories will hopefully help bring the character to a wider audience, as she deserves to be. Interestingly, it also showcases Gownley’s art vividly and dynamically. Gownley deserves more credit than he gets for his inventive use of artwork throughout this series. It’s as creative as Amelia herself.
