When I was growing up, certain truths were just absolute. When it came to comics, Action Comics #1, the first appearance of Superman, which came out in 1938, was the most valuable comic book in the world. Period. And there weren't that many of them. It seemed that this truth had remained in effect when the comic book sold at auction last week for $1 million, a world record. But hold the phone! The record was incredibly short-lived: Detective Comics #27, which features the debut of Batman and was published in 1939, just sold for even more. A copy of it fetched $1,075,000 at a Dallas auction. What's even more amazing than the prices paid for these two comic books is the extreme rarity of them: Experts estimate there are somewhere between 100 and 200 copies of Detective #27 in existence, and only around 100 of Action #1. Plus, both of these comics are in very good condition, an amazing feat when you consider how fragile these comics are.
