Neurocomic
A team of neuroscientists takes you on a journey through the mind in NEUROCOMIC…and it turns out the brain is even stranger than we think. Published last year in England in association with the medical charity organization the Wellcome Trust, NEUROCOMIC is now making its way to the States with its clever scientific lessons and amusing goofiness still intact.
A man finds himself literally lost in thought in the opening pages. He’s not sure where he is, but as he walks through the forest-like terrain, he knows he’s somewhere strange. Turns out he’s exploring his own neurons. How to escape his own brain? Luckily, he runs into a lot of scientists and brain researchers embedded in his own mind, and they’re very eager to show him around while also sharing the many discoveries they made throughout their years of pioneering research on the brain. All of them give us some valuable lessons on how our gray matter truly works (and doesn’t work, in some cases).
The book is cute, and maybe too much so in some cases, but it’s also incredibly informative and obviously expertly presented. Its two young creators --- she earned her Ph.D. in 2007, he obtained his in 2013 --- lend expertise and authenticity to the project, which was no doubt a labor of love for them both. The comics format allows them to have a great deal of fun with the material, which is enjoyable for the reader as such heady topics as “Is my mind something else than the brain? Or is the mind just a product of my brain?” are covered. If you’re at all interested in the question of what makes you truly you, this is the comic to help you better understand both the answer and the question. (Visit the book’s website here.)
